The Minnesota Opera

For two seasons (2000-2001 and 2001-2002) I served as a volunteer photographer for the Minnesota Opera. I photographed during dress rehearsals, and — as opposed to the official (paid) photographer, whose principal task was to take promotional photos — I photographed the operas’ stories as they unfolded on stage at the Ordway Theater.

Following is a selection of the best of those photographs. I was photographing at the dawn of the digital photography age, with the very earliest Canon digital SLR, which used a mere 3.3 megapixel sensor (smaller than the sensor on many modern cellphones). I was using professional lenses, however, which turned out to be key for the quality I was able to achieve.
